Do you need to register for VAT?

You must register if your VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12 months, or you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. You have 30 days from the end of the month you went over to tell HMRC.

Rolling 12 months, not tax year

HMRC looks at any 12 consecutive months, so check your turnover at the end of every month — not just at your year end.

Registering voluntarily

Below £90,000 you can still register. It often pays off in construction, trades and B2B services where customers reclaim VAT and you buy VAT-bearing tools and materials.

Late registration

If you register late, HMRC can charge a penalty and you may owe VAT on sales made since you should have registered — even if you didn't charge it.

FAQ

VAT registration questions

Do I need to register for VAT?
You must register for VAT if your VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or if you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. The threshold applies to sole traders and limited companies alike. You can also register voluntarily below the threshold, which can make sense if most of your customers are VAT-registered or you buy a lot of VAT-bearing equipment.
How long do I have to register once I go over £90,000?
You have 30 days from the end of the month in which your rolling 12-month turnover went over the threshold. Your VAT registration then normally takes effect from the first day of the second month after you went over. Registering late can lead to an HMRC penalty and VAT being due on sales you have already made.
What information do I need to register for VAT?
Sole traders need their National Insurance number, home address history for the last 3 years, business name and activity, start date and turnover figures. Limited companies need the company registration number (we pull the name, registered office, incorporation date and SIC codes from Companies House automatically), plus the director's National Insurance number and home address.
How long does HMRC take to issue a VAT number?
HMRC processing times vary and some applications are selected for extra checks. Tax2U submits your application as your authorised agent, tracks it with HMRC and emails you as soon as your VAT registration certificate and number are issued.
Can I reclaim VAT on purchases made before I registered?
Yes, within limits. You can usually reclaim VAT on goods bought up to 4 years before your registration date if you still have them and use them in the business, and on services bought up to 6 months before registration. Your Tax2U accountant includes eligible pre-registration VAT on your first return.
What is Making Tax Digital for VAT?
Making Tax Digital (MTD) requires all VAT-registered businesses to keep digital records and file VAT returns through HMRC-recognised software. Tax2U keeps your records and files every quarterly VAT return through MTD-compatible software, so you are compliant from your first return.
How much does Tax2U charge for VAT registration?
VAT registration starts from £49 + VAT per month for the first 3 months, which covers your registration, quarterly MTD VAT returns and bookkeeping. From month 4 the service is £200 + VAT per month, including bookkeeping for up to 25 transactions a month and quarterly VAT filing. Higher transaction volumes are quoted before month 4 so there are no surprises. You see the full breakdown before you pay anything.
